The Open Innovation Contest is an important part of NTT DATA’s Open Innovation approach, that values the collaboration with universities, clients, and startups to build a more sustainable society through technology innovation.
In this edition, clients and startups have worked together to design a solution to specific challenges, to be evaluated by a jury composed by venture capitalists, representative of Italian universities, and journalists.

- Challenge 1
- SUSTAINABLE & THINKING CITY
- [Details]
- The challenge is to propose a solution or PoC of a B2B/B2B2C service that, thanks to IoT and AI, can exploit the different available data, allowing a bidirectional communication between the systems (i.e. sensing and/or actuating) and adding value to the urban environment as a whole. The service could be used by citizens, municipalities or agencies that take care of the security of the city.

- Challenge 3
- BE SAFE, BE HEALTHY
- [Details]
- The challenge is to develop a technological ecosystem that allows monitoring and follow-up of people with high risk of developing a chronic disease or people with diagnosed chronic disease. It is intended to avoid the onset of a chronic disease or to detect early chronic disease and slow / stop disease progression, which has a direct implication not only in the well-being of the person but also in the sustainability of health systems. On the other hand, the project also seeks to increase the awareness of chronic disease to promote healthier lifestyles.

- Challenge 4
- MORE THAN MOBILE
- [Details]
- Radio access network towers are among the most pervasive technological infrastructures in developed countries. A capillary mobile radio access (the outcome of decades of heavy investments by telecom operators) is available not just in cities and towns, but basically covers the whole territory – including remote rural areas. Admittedly, the topology (e.g. the “density of nodes”) of such a network has been specifically designed for mobile communications. Nonetheless, the potential of radio access towers is huge (because of their spread and resource equipment – power, core network connectivity, best positioning for access) and still largely unexplored. The challenge is then to explore the use cases of such an existing infrastructure in the view of their further, novel usage for the “smart road” scenario, in which the infrastructure can be used in order to offer new and disruptive smart mobility services, and the “smart land” one, using the AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) technology stack.

- Challenge 5
- TRUST MY CALL
- [Details]
- The challenge is to propose a PoC that, taking into account the different digital communication channels through which a banking institution may contact their customers, ensures that the identity of the calling institution is transferred in a clear, trusted and non-modifiable way. The solution must address the different types of frauds (phishing, vishing, smishing,…), which are continuously evolving. By means of the appropriate technologies, the solution will guarantee the truthfulness of the information received by the customer of the institution, preventing her / him from providing data to any non-certified scammers.

- Challenge 6
- MOBILITY RISK DETECTOR
- [Details]
- Starting from a set of aggregated and anonymized data coming from our connected vehicle fleet, the challenge is to create a solution to dynamically predict risks of accidents and thefts in a certain location (road, zip-code, region...) and at a certain period of time. The solution shall identify and detail what other external data sources impact the risk prediction (completely up to the start-up to identify meaningful data sets) and make use of innovative technologies for data processing (typically AI based). The solution shall be tested and validated in a limited geographical area; however, it shall be scalable and not limited to the area itself.

- Challenge 7
- PREDICTIVE MANUFACTURING
- [Details]
- The challenge is to propose a solution that, using data sent by IIoT sensors available in the plant, leverages ML technology to build a predictive model able to detect the anomalies in the production process of a component and predict the occurrence of a scrap event in advance, in order to resolve the issue as soon as possible and a) minimize the occurrence of scraps, improving efficiency and sustainability of the production process b) minimize the human intervention on the production stations.

- Challenge 8
- CYBER-CARS IN AN HYPERCONNECTED WORLD
- [Details]
- The challenge is to propose a solution that continuously analyzes real-time data from the CAN bus to create a model / digital twin of the vehicle architecture, defining a “baseline” traffic and behavior – after adequate learning time - and being able to detect the behavior anomalies that may be generated by a cyberattack and/or a malfunction in one or more of the cars components. The solution should work for any car architecture, and it should be able to model CAN bus architecture digital twin without any additional information on the vehicle design. After completing the learning phase, it should be possible to run the solution either in a cloud environment or in an embedded system. Data collection from CAN Bus and data streaming to the proposed solution/platform is out of scope. Implementation of the algorithm on embedded systems is out of scope (but feasibility should be granted at least).

- Challenge 9
- SHAPE YOUR OWN FUTURE
- [Details]
- The challenge is to design a PoC that, based on information about company employees and on positions needing adequate coverage inside the company, helps HR to discover talents, design paths for their growth, assist them in achieving the new roles and eventually support them in fulfilling their potential. People will be able to interact with the system, which will analyze their skills with respect to the aimed role, assess them through the help of e.g. guided interviews and role-plays, and will suggest ad hoc coaching paths. The solution will also help in achieving a continuous assessment of people’s adequacy for the new role, suggesting training as needed and coaching them in adapting to changes in their role as they become necessary.

- Challenge 10
- SPEAK TO ME
- [Details]
- The challenge is to propose a solution that, basing digital and emerging technologies such as Natural Language Processing, provides a common omnichannel user experience to a service provider call center. The solution should handle the introductory steps of the user’s request (first actions on a mobile app, as well as the first minute of the call), and should rapidly assess its nature and degree of urgency. Additional side-information carried by the caller beyond the explicit contents (dependent by the chosen channel – e.g. distress in the voice, frequent mistyping) should also be analyzed, either to classify the request as “emergency”, “urgent”, or simply “angry”. On a more business-oriented side, this assessment can also provide profiling details about the caller, helpful for the operator, or for later customer analysis.

- Challenge 11
- GUARDIAN ANGELS
- [Details]
- The challenge is to devise a solution to remotely track outdoor work sites, through “sensors” (either general-purpose ones, e.g. webcams, either fixed or mounted on drones – or domain-specific ones) and innovative technologies for data processing (typically AI based). Likewise, proposed ideas can be either generally applicable to a wide range of outdoor activities, or specific to a particular use case for which continuous tracking and monitoring is considered valuable. In any case, the solution should be respectful of the workers’ privacy (GDPR-compliant). Proposed ideas will also be ranked against their ease of deployment and portability, since monitoring can be assumed to be made randomly on different sites using the same resources.
